Orange Yokihi Medaka Ricefish
Source: Aquarium Bred and Raised Estimated size at shipping: 0.75-1" Adult Size: around 1.5-2" Sold as: Unsexed Overview: The Medaka Ricefish has been selectively bred in Japan since the 17th century. Like Koi, aristocrats took great pleasure in developing breeds of ricefish with new colors, patterns, and finnage. There are currently over 500 recognized breeds of ricefish, only a few of which are currently available in the USA. Ricefish are curious, outgoing fish with personalities similar to guppies. They do well with other peaceful tankmates of an appropriate size. This is one of the easiest egg-laying fish breed and raise. The eggs are large and tough. Upon hatching, the fry are quite big which makes them easy to feed from the beginning. Setup Considerations: These are a hardy species which can be kept in aquariums or outdoor ponds. They do well in a wide range of setups from bare bones to skillfully aquascaped. Being from Japan, this is a temperate species which can handle the high temperatures of summer as well as winter cold. There are even reports of them surviving in outdoor ponds under ice. Diet: Medaka are not picky eaters and, in our experience, will eagerly take anything offered from flakes and pellets to frozen foods. We feed a rotation of a variety of foods to ensure they get a well rounded diet.
