This is our first time with this fish. So far, they have proven peaceful and hardy.
Tetras are one of the most popular aquarium fish because their are just so many kinds that there is something for everyone. Their generally small size and peaceful nature make them easy aquarium inhabitants and many of them are strikingly colorful, making them pleasing to watch.
Setup Considerations:
The key to keeping almost all the tetras is to keep them in large groups. In nature, they tend to form shoal and/or schools as a defense against predation. In the aquarium, they maintain these instincts and will feel vulnerable if they are not in a group. Luckily, most tetras are small enough that keeping a large group of them is possible even in modest sized aquaria. Most tetras are open-water swimmers and, although they look great in well planted and/or decorated aquariums, they don't require them.
Diet:
In the wild, most tetras are omnivores. During the wet season, they have rich pickings of various insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms, etc. In the dry season however, these rich food sources are greatly reduced and many tetras rely on detritus, algae, and biofilm to get them through the lean times. This ability to switch food sources make them very adaptable to aquarium foods and they will relish almost any dry, frozen, or live foods offered. We typically feed a rotation of Aquarium Coop Easy Community Floating Pellets and/or Magic Small Fish Feed, Xtreme Krill Flake, Xtreme Monster Pellets, algae flakes, algae wafers, and the occasional treat of brine shrimp or blood worms.

Overview: This rare find is one of the newest tetras to be introduced into the aquarium hobby. They're very outgoing and school together pretty tightly when kept in large numbers.

Some are pure white/pink, some have a light brownish tinge to them, but all are albinos with red eyes.
Most Corydoras are perfect citizens in a peaceful community aquarium. There are hundreds of species with a wide range of colors, patterns, and fin shapes. Affectionately referred to as Corys, these small catfish are always entertaining as they clown around together searching for food. Most are 100% non-aggressive, relying on their heavy body armor to protect them. Corys live by the phrase "make love, not war," spawning in large communal aggregations without combat or displays of dominance. Because of their peaceful nature, there is never any worry about stress due to bullying or hierarchy disputes.

Something interesting about these catfish is how they supplement their oxygen intake by breathing atmospheric air. They do this by darting up to the surface, taking a gulp of air, and darting back down to the substrate. This is perfectly normal behavior which adds to the charm of their clownish behavior.
Setup Considerations:
Corydoras can be found on a wide range of substrates in the wild ranging from mud to sand to rock. However, all the species we have kept have greatly appreciated a substrate of fine sand which they constantly sift through for food, often burying their faces up to their eyeballs as they push into the sand. Fine sand is not strictly necessary and they will do just fine on a wide variety of substrates, or even on the glass bottom of an aquarium, but, if you can provide sand, you will see a lot of really enjoyable behavior as they root around for food.

This fish is highly gregarious and only truly thrives when kept in groups...the bigger the better.
Diet:
Corydoras need protein rich foods in order to thrive. Unfortunately, they are often sold as "cleaner" fish with the expectation that they will get enough nutrition by sucking algae and other gunk from the substrate. While they do need some plant matter in their diet, they are not effective algae eaters. In fact, for optimal health, it is recommended that they be target fed a variety of sinking pellets and wafers, as well as the occasional offering of frozen and live foods. They can eat quite a lot, but are somewhat slow feeders. We have found that regularly feeding long-lasting foods such as large pellets, wafers, and Repashy and letting the Corys graze on these foods for a few hours at a time helps keep them fat and sassy.

Overview: These tiny Corys are great for nano community aquariums. We source the best and work with a Certified Aquatic Veterinarian to insure our livebearers are healthy. Our vet has developed quarantine and medication protocol which we follow to ensure the health of our Guppies, Swordtails, Mollies, and Platies. If you have had problems keeping livebearers healthy in the past, try these. They might not be the cheapest, but that's because we've done the work to make sure they are the healthiest in the aquarium fish industry.

There is a reason livebearers are some of the most popular aquarium fish in the world. They are generally peaceful, active, and come in a wide array of colorful shapes, sizes, and patterns. Also, they are one of the easiest fish to breed and raise. This, combined with the vast array of strains available, means there is no end to the neat variations which can be developed by hobbyist breeders.
Setup Considerations:
Platies, Mollies, and Swordtails do well in a wide variety of setups. Anything from a bare tank with an established filter to a fully aquascaped, planted aquarium works for them. As long as the aquarium is mature enough that water parameters will be stable and ammonia/nitrites/nitrates won't be an issue, they should do well. We keep our guppies at 79 degrees F, but they can be kept anywhere from the mid-70s to the low 80s. They are easiest to keep in hard, alkaline water, which makes them perfect for most fish keepers in the USA.

These fish do best kept in groups...especially the swordtails and mollies. If a single male is kept, he may try to breed with other species in the tank, which will annoy them. The drive to breed is so strong that I've had males try to breed with tetras, rainbowfish, and rasboras when they were kept without adequate numbers of their own species. If only a couple of males are kept, one may rise to dominance and constantly harass the other one. If kept in large groups, the males will constantly display and spar, showing their full beauty without any single fish being singled out and dominated.

Livebearers are not usually considered jumpers, but they can jump out of aquariums...especially during the first few weeks when they are still adjusting to their new home. A tight lid during this time will help keep them in their tanks and off the floor.
Diet: Omnivore
These fish are omnivores, but their natural diet contains a significant amount of plant matter. The males flash bright yellow-orange from the top lip up to the dorsal fin when they display...like a bright neon flashlight.

The current group are juveniles and have not developed their color yet, but they will turn into beauties as the grow and mature.
Peaceful, active fish. Rainbowfish are generally hardy and easy to care for. Rainbowfish are truly unique in that the males of most species have a bright iridescent strip running from the top of the mouth up over the ridge of the back and continuing to the dorsal fin. Males frequently "flash" this bright strip on-and-off in absolutely stunning displays. When they flash, it looks like a neon light is being turned on and off. This, combined with the amazing coloration of many species, is something truly special that is not to be missed. Fortunately, these fish display and flash frequently.

Unfortunately, many, if not most, rainbowfish are critically endangered because their habitats are being destroyed by rapid industrial expansion. The pattern has been that as soon as roads are built that allow explorers access to new rainbowfish species, industry follows and the habitats disappear in short order. The habitats of many populations have disappeared, seemingly overnight. There are no effective government controls to mitigate this and the cycle of habitat destruction is not going to stop anytime soon. Gladly, almost all rainbowfish available for sale in the USA are bred and raised in aquariums and not collected from the wild. However, if these captive populations are ever lost, many of these fish will disappear. The more of us who keep these jewels, the higher the probability they won't completely disappear from the earth.
Setup Considerations:
Most rainbows of the Melanotaenia, Glossolepis, and Chilatherina genre grow to 5" - 6," maybe even more on the largest species. Many people successfully keep rainbows in tanks that are around 3 feet long...it can be done. However, these fish are rapid swimmers and do best in a tank that is at least 4 feet long (the length of a standard 55 gallon aquarium). If your tank is smaller, we would recommend sticking to the dwarf species which top out at around 3-3.5" or less. Alternatively, looking into the closely related Pseudomugil genus (commonly called Blue Eyes) might yield the perfect species for a small aquarium.
Diet:
Rainbowfish are easy to feed. They are not picky and will greedily and rapidly eat most standard aquarium foods. However, they can develop problems when fed large, hard food. You could receive anything from a pure white fish, to a gold and red fish, to a mostly wild-colored fish.

The first time I encountered the Roseline Barb was years ago on a trip to Sacramento's Capital Aquarium in Northern California. They were in a bowfront aquarium on an aisle endcap, and they stopped me in my tracks. The bright red stripe, the scissor tail with yellow blotches...this was a beautiful addition to the hobby and I took several minutes to observe and appreciate them.

In June of 2020, the Roseline Barb once again stopped me in my tracks when I first laid eyes on the Gold form of this fish. If you replace the brown base color of a wild-type Roseline with bright gold and expand the thickness of the red stripe, you have yourself a Gold Roseline. They are some of the most brightly colored of all freshwater fish and they are magnificent.

This fish is not a hybrid or a separate species. Rather, it is a xanthic variation (often called "lutino", especially in the bird world) of the wild-colored population. The difference is similar to seeing a lutino colored cockatiel sitting next to a wild-type cockatiel. The Golden variant was developed in Indonesia when one popped up in a batch of aquarium bred fish being raised on a fish farm. The gold "sport" was removed and became the ancestor of all the Gold Roseline Barbs in existence today.

The first Gold Roselines I ever heard about were obtained by Maidenhead Aquatics in England during the final months of 2012. Despite being in the trade for almost a decade, they are still a very rare fish. Only a few are produced each year, and supply cannot keep up with demand. So, it took almost 8 years before I was able to find the breeder in Indonesia, import a group, and see them in person. That first glimpse of them in the bag made the wait worth it...bucket list fish acquired!

Although their behavior, size, and care requirements are the same as those of the well loved wild-type Roseline Barbs, the Gold variants have a few peculiarities which are worth considering before purchasing these fish. The first is that not all of them are a pristine gold color. A few are ghostly white. Some of these white individuals retain their red lips and red dorsal fin. In an online July 25, 2013 Amazonas article, these red-lipped-white fish were described as a "Lipstick" variant, indicating that they are a line-bred form. However, we question if the form is in fact something that can be line bred. From what we've observed, it seems to be a random occurrence in the Gold line rather than a separate morph which can be genetically fixed.

The larger color issue is browning. As youngsters, the majority of the Gold Roselines are in fact gold, but as they grow, an unknown percentage of them begin to develop blotches of brown coloration. In some cases, this blotching stays minor and looks amazing as it contrasts with the bright gold body and red markings. In others, it grows until the fish looks very similar to the standard wild-type populations - still a very pretty fish, but not much in the way of gold coloration. Of the six fish that I have kept for over a year, two have become mostly brown, one is distinctly blotched (I think he looks super cool!), and three retained almost all of their gold. This color change looks very similar to, and may indeed be, some sort of piebald phenomenon. It is erratic, unpredictable, and probably quite frustrating to the uninformed purchaser...consider yourself informed :).

The last thing to consider before purchasing the Gold Roseline Barb is its eyes. Some of them have eyes that are completely lacking in pigment while others have black eyes or something in-between clear and black. Some of these seem to go blind, or at least to have a very limited visual range. Like the development of the brown color, the percentage which will develop eye issues is unknown. It seems to be erratic and unpredictable. In some batches we've had, almost all of them developed some kind of eye issue. In others, only about 3% seemed to have it. It is unknown if the fish are born with impaired vision or develop it as they mature. Luckily for these fish, they have sensory barbels on the corners of their mouths which help them locate food even in the dark, so Roselines with eye issues can still eat well. However, they will be a lot slower to locate food and are more likely to be outcompeted by fast feeders...something to keep in mind when considering tankmates for any Gold Roselines which happen to become visually impaired.

Even though some of them will unpredictably change colors and some can develop eye problems, I still enjoy this fish very much. It has all the characteristics which make the standard wild-type Roselines so popular as well as some amazing coloration. I even enjoy the unpredictability of their possible color changes...something to keep me on my toes!
Barbs, named for the sensory barbels on their mouths, come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and temperaments. Most are peaceful, energetic fishes which add movement and color to their aquariums. They are also some of the hardiest species, making them fairly easy aquarium fish to keep. A few species, like the infamous Tiger Barb, are fin-nippers and have given all Barbs a mostly undeserved reputation as "aggressive." In actuality, most barbs are quite peaceful, especially if kept in large groups. They are assertive, curious, and fast feeders, so they don't mix well with shy species or slow eaters. Barring that, however, they are generally fine companions for many species of community fish.
Setup Considerations:
Most barbs in the aquarium hobby are highly social. When kept in large groups, their best colors and most interesting behaviors come to the forefront and, since they are focused on the others in their group, they are less curious about other species in the tank. Less curious = less bothersome, so we recommend keeping barbs in shoals, especially in community aquariums.
Diet: Omnivore
These omnivores are generally among the easiest aquarium fish to feed. They will eagerly eat pretty much everything from dry prepared foods and gel foods to frozen and live foods. In nature, they eat insects and their larvae, as well as large amounts of detritus containing decaying plant matter. In the aquarium, a rotation of plant based and animal protein based foods will help ensure they receive an adequately balanced diet.

Overview: Even though these are all genetically Gold Roseline Barbs, the reality is that the strain's colors are not stable and they come in a wide range of colors (read on for more information about this).

It was in the early ‘90s. I was about 13 years old, and was visiting Jim Forshey, owner of the Aquatic Bookshop and my fish Godfather, for the first time. Up until I walked into Jim's fishroom, I had thought all corydoras were basically colorless, brown fish. I was stunned when I saw a group of colorful Corydoras sterbai in one of Jim's tanks. They have been one of my favorites ever since. Back then, they were very rare in the hobby and a group cost more than I earned mowing lawns in a year. However, with its orange pectoral fin rays and striped pattern made from many horizontal rows of small dots, this has become one of the most popular aquarium catfish and prices have become much more reasonable.

Lineage 9 "Hoplisoma":

Corydoras type fishes come from 9 distinct lineages. For the most part, the species in the Brochis, Aspidoras, and Scleromystax lineages have already been assigned to distinct genera. The remaining lineages are also likely to be split into their own genera once taxonomists get around to reviewing the groupings.

Diet: Omnivore

Overview: I'll never forget when I first saw Corydoras sterbai. This is normal and the blotches will disappear as the fish mature.
We source the best and work with a Certified Aquatic Veterinarian to insure our livebearers are healthy. If you have had problems keeping livebearers healthy in the past, try these. They might not be the cheapest, but that's because we've done the work to make sure they are the healthiest in the aquarium fish industry.

There is a reason guppies (and endlers) are one of the top 10 most popular aquarium fish in the world. They are peaceful, active, and come in a wide array of colorful shapes, sizes, and patterns. Also, they are one of the easiest fish to breed and raise. This, combined with the vast array of strains available, means there is no end to the neat variations which can be developed by hobbyist breeders.
Setup Considerations:
Guppies and endlers do well in a wide variety of setups.
Diet: Omnivore
Guppies are omnivores, but the majority of their diet is plant matter. Most of these present with normal fins, but you might get long finned fish depending on luck of the draw when we go to catch these for your orders.

They're very outgoing and school together pretty tightly when kept in large numbers.

Diet: Omnivore
Corydoras need protein rich foods in order to thrive. Unfortunately, they are often sold as "cleaner" fish with the expectation that they will get enough nutrition by sucking algae and other gunk from the substrate. In fact, for optimal health, it is recommended that they be target fed a variety of sinking pellets and wafers, as well as the occasional offering of frozen and live foods. They can live 2-3 years or more and they can be bred using the non-annual water incubation method or the annual peat moss method. They breed well in hard water and soft water.
Some of the prettiest fish on the planet are killifish. This diverse group is sometimes referred to as the "egg-laying tooth carps" in order to distinguish them from their close relatives, the livebearers. In many ways, a killifish is a livebearer that lays eggs. The non-annual species generally live as long as your typical livebearers. The annual species typically last 12-18 months. Like their livebearer relatives, most killies are easy to keep and feed. They are also famously hardy.
Setup Considerations:
Killifish are one of the most diverse groups of fish on the planet. They have adapted to many habitats from hypersaline environments to pristine rainforest streams to temporary pools. Therefore, there is no "one sized fits all" way to keep killifish. However, most killies in the aquarium hobby can be kept in anything from a small bare tank with a sponge filter and a spawning mop to a large planted show aquarium with a community of species with an appropriate size and temperament. The one thing almost every killifish setup needs is a tight fitting lid. Killies are expert jumpers. If there is a hole in the lid, they will find it and they will manage to jump out of it.
Diet:
Most killifish in the aquarium hobby are carnivores. A few of the pupfish species are herbivores, but besides the Florida Flagfish, pupfish are rarely available to the average aquarist. Die-hard killie keepers generally feed their fish lots of live and frozen foods. However, that is not strictly necessary. High quality dry foods such as flakes, pellets, crumbles, etc. are also good food for killies. A rotation which includes frozen and dry foods usually results in fat, sassy killifish.

Overview: If I could only ever keep one fish for the rest of my life, this would be it!

I am often asked which is the best killifish to start with. They breed well in hard water and soft water.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0956/0368/7722/files/Dans_Fish_My_All_Time_Favorite_Killifish_-_Pairs_fundulopanchax_gardneri_biassa_1_657c119d1e204d61b6471f4a5c4b32b1_733.jpg?v=1778634553
pea-puffer
Pea Puffer

Natural Range: Kerala, India
Source: Harvested from Nature
Estimated size at shipping: 0.25-0.75
Adult Size: around 0.5-1"
Sold as: Unsexed
Overview:
One of the most fun fish to keep, these nano-puffers have all the inquisitive personality which makes their larger cousins such great wet pets, but are less expensive to buy, less expensive to feed, and much easier to house.

While a few customers report success keeping these puffers in a mixed species community aquarium, our experience, and that of the majority of our customers, is that these feisty puffers are likely to nip the fins of other species.

Some however, such as the Boraras species and the various Axelrodi types, are much less assertive and can be outcompeted by more boisterous fish.

So, we find it best to feed "soft" foods like flakes, frozen foods, Repashy, and the like. If pellets are fed, they should be very small (think Xtreme Nano or Hikari Micropellet size) or softened by being soaked in water before they are fed.

Overview: This fish is one of the most widely distributed of the "Blue Eyed Rainbows." There are many collection points and many color forms, but the Aru IV is our favorite because they sport brightly colored tips on their fins which add a lot of spectacle when they display - And they display frequently.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0956/0368/7722/files/Dans_Fish_Pseudomugil_gertrudae_Aru_IV_IMG_20210621_174007_313_b1bbfb78ae0542f492683582ae2f17d9_7927.jpg?v=1778634638
cherry-barb
Cherry Barb

Source: Aquarium Bred and Raised
Estimated size at shipping: 0.5-1"
Adult Size: around 1.5-2"
Sold as: Unsexed
Overview:
Cherry Barbs have been an aquarium favourite for decades. Most rasboras will readily fit the bill. They come in a wide variety of shapes and colors and, while a few grow fairly large, most of the species available in the aquarium hobby are rather small fish.
Setup Considerations:
Many rasboras, such as the Harlequin Rasboras, are assertive feeders that can get their fair share in a community aquarium with tetras and the like. Some however, such as the Boraras species and the various Axelrodi types, are much less assertive and can be outcompeted by more boisterous fish. For this reason, tankmates need to be chosen with care.
Diet:
It sometimes takes newly acquired rasboras a few days to adjust to new foods, but they are not difficult to transition to dry prepared foods. We like to give them a feeding of baby brine shrimp or crushed flakes, after which we drop in a large, water stable algae wafer or protein pellet so they have something to graze on throughout the day.
